Breast Cancer Awareness Month - Get Involved! 💕

Breast Cancer Awareness Month - 01/10/2023 to 31/10/2023

For over 20 years, Breast Cancer Now has been wearing pink and raised a whopping £39 million in the process! Wow! 👏 It's become one of the biggest fundraising events in the UK and thousands of people take part during breast cancer awareness month to help raise awareness. How amazing is that?

This year, Wear It Pink day will be on 20/10/2023 and we'll deffo be getting involved here at DLSB HQ! We're of course going to be wearing pink as well as bringing in some pink treats to share. Keep an eye on our socials for some BTS! 💗🧁🍭

If you fancy getting involved too, all you need to do is fill out a simple registration form on the Breast Cancer Now website and you'll receive a free fundraising pack to help you get started. Pick a date, spread the word and think pink!

Also pairs perfectly with a glass of champers and a pink cake from the coffee morning.

Now you've got your 'fit sorted, you'll need to plan your event! See below for some super fun ideas we're loving...

  1. A bake off! This is a fab idea for inside and outside of work. Bake cakes (extra points if they're pink!) and invite your friends round or bring them into work and vote who is the best baker. Raising money for a good cause and yummy!
  2. Tombolas and raffles! Ask friends and local shops or businesses if they'd like to donate a prize for your tombola or raffle, let them know why you're doing it and that you'd like some prizes to gibe out on the day. The more prizes the better, but don't worry if they say no as it may not be possible for them - there's no harm in trying.
  3. Pink cocktail making! Invite your friends and/or family round or even hire out a space in a bar and make pink cocktails or mocktails. It's a super fun way to get involved especially if you love a tipple. Cosmopolitans, strawberry mojitos, watermelon daiquiris, pink gin spritz, french martinis... or even get creative and invent your own!
  4. Best dressed - pink edition! Gather your troops and dress up in your best pink 'fits. You could tie this in with your pink cocktail making evening and strive for most glam, or you could even take this to the workplace and see who can create the funniest pink outfit! Andy from finance would look great in a pink tutu and matching leg warmers 🤣. Life doesn't always have to be so serious and it's a great way to great way to get involved.
  5. Coffee morning! Ask friends and family if they'd like to contribute snacks or assortments of teas and coffees. It's always nice to get together, especially when it's to raise money for a good cause.
  6. Zoom call! Work remotely? Long distance besties? This way you can still all get together and get involved in Wear It Pink day. Change your backgrounds to pink, get dressed up and chit chat with your morning coffees or hold an afternoon quiz!

We all have some sort of connection to breast cancer. Whether you have been affected yourself, a family member, a friend or someone you know. In the UK, 1 in 7 women and about 1 in 100 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. This is why it is so important that we educate ourselves.

Everyone has breast tissue – people of all ages, races and genders. So whatever your age or gender or race, it's great to get to know your body! Being aware of breast cancer signs or symptoms is super important because it's very treatable and survival rates are higher if it's found early enough. Check yourself regularly, know what is normal for you and don't just look, feel too! And, as always, if in doubt go and get checked out as soon as possible.

For more information on how to check your chest, follow the link below! You can check in any way that you are most comfortable with. In the shower, in bed, in the mirror whilst you get dressed. The following link has handy pointers to help you out...
